Winchester City Flyers 2 Newbury Ladies 1st 2
Newbury Ladies FC First Team played away in the league to Winchester City Flyers. Unfortunately for Newbury, they fell behind in just the first minute of the match, and although this was a set-back, they rallied, re-grouped and steadied themselves for the next 10 minutes or so.

Whilst the home side had a lot of possession, Newbury were organised and compact, and their defensive qualities were beginning to show. And then they were able to catch Winchester on the break in the 14th minute, after Jo Walsh-Perks won the ball back superbly in a strong, but well-timed tackle just on the half way line. She sent Ellie Reed away on the left and her cross evaded the back-line of Winchester City, to be met at pace by Rebecca Chitolie. Her first time finish gave the home keeper no chance and meant that Newbury were now back on level terms at 1-1.

The first half became a high tempo, closely fought affair, between two very good and experienced Premier Division teams. With half time approaching, Winchester again got their noses in front, when a long range shot from the edge of the area evaded the Newbury goalkeeper. 2-1 now to Winchester after 40 minutes. This was a killer blow to Newbury, but they reacted quickly and they reacted well. In first half stoppage time, Newbury scored an equaliser. This time Chitolie was involved in the build-up, supplying the pass for striker Gabriely Da Silva to have an effort on goal. Her shot was well saved, but the ball came out into box from the re-bound and it fell into the path of Walsh-Perks, who gracefully and with such composure placed her shot into the gaping part of the net for 2-2. Winchester had no time to respond, so that score-line remained at the half time interval.

In the second half, Newbury were determined to build on their good first half display. They continued with real discipline and concentration in their defensive work, and they had a goal threat going forward. Chitolie had two efforts well saved by the Winchester keeper, and Lorna Kinder-Parr had a great chance, but she was just unable to latch onto a cross. Ellie Reed was playing a blinder in attack for Newbury, getting through a huge amount of unselfish running, not giving the home defence a moment’s peace.

Neither team was able to convert again in the second period and so a draw at 2-2 was a fair result, and it had been a thoroughly enjoyable encounter.
