Match Report -- Season 2019-20
Southern Region Women's Football League Premier Division
1st December 2019
Abingdon Utd 7 Newbury Ladies 1st 0
Newbury Ladies First Team travelled to Abingdon Town Ladies in the Premier Division but they again suffered a morale-sapping defeat at the hands of their hosts.

Arriving late at the game due to an accident on the A34, and requiring a delayed kick off, Newbury then found themselves three nil down inside the opening 15 minutes. So it had been a disastrous start for the Berkshire side. They then rallied for a spell, but Abingdon’s ruthless attack scored again on 42 minutes.

Despite being four nil down, Newbury came agonisingly close to scoring themselves right on the stroke of half time, when Gabriely Da Silva was fouled 30 yards out. She stepped up to take the free kick herself, but her shot was just too central and it allowed the Abingdon keeper to get her outstretched fingers to the ball and just tip it over the bar. So it remained four nil to the hosts at half time.

Newbury then started the second period really well, with plenty of attacking threat through Da Silva and Charlotte Hull, but they were unable to convert, thanks to some good defensive work by Abingdon’s goalkeeper and back-line. Abingdon then went onto score another two quick goals, to make the score-line six nil in their favour. Before Newbury then had one further gilt-edged chance, after Da Silva was played through and her pace took her clear of the last Abingdon defender. However, the home keeper was quickly off her line to somehow save Da Silva’s shot. Newbury’s players, low on confidence, deserved at least a consolation goal, but it was not to be and they conceded again late on, to see Abingdon claim an emphatic 7-0 victory.

On a difficult day, Newbury’s Player of the Match was defender, Sam Atkins, who made a number of last ditch and goal saving tackles.
