Newbury Ladies FC Development Team hosted bottom of the table side, Caversham AFC. But it looked as though Newbury’s players were still in slumber after the unusual early morning kick off time. The home team just could not get their football flowing in the first half and Caversham’s players were extremely pleased to get to half time with the match still goal-less.
Newbury began to perform much better after the interval and they spent large passages of the game, with Caversham penned back in their own defensive half. Numerous scoring chances were created by Newbury, with one notable long range effort from Lorna Kinder-Parr agonisingly clipping the top of the crossbar. However, as the match wore on, it looked increasingly likely that Caversham would somehow hang on for a draw and a point. But then as late as the 77th minute, Newbury were able to call upon key substitutes, Bec Walker and Kendall Gilmour. The former drew a foul right on the edge of the Caversham penalty area, so Newbury were awarded a free kick. The returning Gilmour, making her first appearance of the season after significant health issues, stepped up to take the set piece. She made no mistake, with her thunderous shot simply unstoppable. As the Caversham net rippled, the relief amongst the Newbury squad was palpable. It was the breakthrough they had been striving so hard for and now they had just ten minutes to make sure of the victory.
Newbury duly did this, collecting all three points from a gutsy one nil win, and also their first clean sheet of the season.
