Mortimer Ladies 2 Newbury Ladies Development 1
A depleted team for Newbury Ladies FC Development suffered a narrow 1-2 loss, when playing away at Mortimer Ladies FC. They fell behind early on, but then scored a good equaliser on the half hour mark through the returning Bec Walker, when set up by Alex Kovacsova.
It remained tied at one all as the half time whistle sounded, and then despite huge amounts of Newbury pressure, they were unable to score a crucial second goal in the second half. Kovacsova came closest when she hit the bar from distance.
Newbury were able to welcome back Claire Turley after suspension and they also gave a debut to the lively Louise Gulliver, but it was not enough to force a breakthrough. With the scores still tied at one goal apiece, it was the Mortimer players who rallied and finished the game more strongly. The Home side scoring a second goal in the game’s final stages. It was cruel on Newbury’s players, who could not be faulted for work rate or commitment. But it was Mortimer Ladies who collected all three points.
