Newbury Ladies Development 4
Caversham AFC Swans Women 2
Newbury Ladies FC Development Team hosted Caversham Swans at the Donnington Recreation Ground, but it was not the start to the game that Newbury had been hoping or planning for. With the visitors opening the scoring after 12 minutes when a player was unmarked in the box and converted with ease. Newbury huffed and puffed for much of the first half, but with no return for their efforts. Their best chance came in the 28th minute when midfielder, Lauren Sheldon, connected with a thunderbolt shot, after a strong run and cross by Alex Kovacsova. But sadly for Newbury, the visiting keeper pulled off the best save of the match to deny her. And so the first half finished with Caversham still leading by the one goal to nil.

With Kovacsova switched to a more central attacking role after the break, Newbury immediately looked more threatening at the start of the second period. Kovacsova linking well with Nicole Beesley, who’s running was tireless. The latter earning a corner, which Kovacsova took brilliantly. Her wicked delivery was well met by the diminutive, Maria Rodrigues, who rose highest to head home from close range. It was the equaliser that Newbury had been working for and they were now back in the box seat. Not long after it was another Kovacsova/Rodrigues combination that saw Newbury take the lead for the first time in the contest. This time, it was a saved shot from Kovacsova, which Rodrigues had followed up to tap in the rebound, scoring her second and Newbury’s second goal of the afternoon. 2-1 now to the hosts.

It was midway through the second half and Newbury were now dominant and attacking at will. Kovacsova got herself on the score sheet, when she ran onto a sublime forward pass from Kendall Gilmour, that saw her convert with a clipped finish to extend Newbury’s lead to 3-1. Caversham’s misery was further compounded when a defender scored in her own net, after more good work from Beesley. Caversham were awarded a consolation penalty for a clumsy tackle. The match ended in a very well deserved 4-2 victory to Newbury Development.
