Women's Football League Cup Round 1
Sunday 29th October 2017
Woodstock Town Ladies Reserves 1
Newbury Ladies Development 7
The Newbury Ladies Development Team travelled to Oxfordshire to face Woodstock Town Reserves in the opening round of the Thames Valley League Counties League Cup. Newbury got off to a flying start and quickly stamped their authority onto the game, with the opening seconds of the match seeing the first Newbury attack. After just 50 seconds Newbury's Nicole Beesley pounced on a goal kick, winning the ball just outside the box, and playing a first time pass through to Alice Hill who turned and struck her shot well. The ball nestled into the top left hand corner of the goal to make it one nil to the visitors.

Newbury continued to pressure the home side and just 2 minutes later were rewarded with a second goal through Nicole Beesley, following a quick throw in and an intelligent pass by Kendall Gilmour. Woodstock struggled to get out of their own half, but did manage a quick attack down the left wing which was dealt with well by defender, Saide Gulliver, and a good save by Hazel Beesley in goal. Newbury continued to dominate with some commanding play down the left from Nicole Beesley, who was having a lot of joy against the Woodstock full back. Newbury’s third goal came after 13 mins when Hill laid the ball back to Gilmour, who was lurking on the edge of the area. Gilmour hit a well weighted shot over the goalkeeper from 25 yards to give her side a three nil lead.

Newbury continued to put pressure on the home side forcing them into making mistakes. The fourth goal for the visitors came after some strong defensive play by Lauren Sheldon. Sheldon put her body on the line for a painful block and remained composed to then play a nice pass to Nicole Beesley, who in turn played in Hill for a well struck shot to make it four nil. Newbury benefited from the light and breezy Autumnal conditions and were able to play some attractive passing football. However Woodstock looked eager and able on the break, but the Newbury defensive line stood firm. Newbury's fifth goal came in the 21st minute after a powerful shot by Hill was parried into the path of Alex Kovacsova, who supplied a poacher's finish. Woodstock came alive towards the end of the first half, winning themselves a couple of corners which Newbury managed to clear successfully. It remained five nil to visitors going into the half time break.

The home side came out strongly in the second period and made it difficult for the visitors to maintain the high intensity and goal scoring of the first half. Newbury, not to be denied more goals, did create a sixth with a lovely attacking move down the flank, with Nicole Beesley again playing a nice through ball to Hill, who coolly finished low to the keepers left. Then a seventh goal came after Marie Prout played a pass to Maria Rodrigues in the middle of the park. Rodrigues taking a shot on the half volley, which beat the keeper from some distance. It was a wonderful strike for seven nil.

In the closing stages of the game, Woodstock rallied to create some excellent chances and were rewarded with a consolation goal with 15 minutes remaining on the clock. They pressed for a second goal and came very close after they managed to beat the Newbury keeper, only to have the ball cleared off the line by Saide Gulliver, who put in an excellent, player of the match, performance at full back.
