Match Report -- Season 2017-18
Berks & Bucks Women's Junior Cup Round 1
Sunday 15th October 2017
Stanford-in-the-Vale Women 0
Newbury Ladies Development 13
The Newbury Ladies Development Team were again on the road when they travelled to take on Stanford Women in the opening round of the County Junior Cup. They were helped by the fact that the opposition could only field ten players, but nonetheless, Newbury needed to break down the home defence, create the chances and then be clinical enough to score from their opportunities in front of goal. And score they did, although it did take until the 18th minute for the floodgates to open. Newbury Captain, Kendall Gilmour latched onto a loose ball in midfield and then found a pass that played in Alice Hill, who coolly side footed a shot passed the on-rushing goalkeeper for one nil. Buoyed by this first goal, Hill then sprang into life and she scored another 3 goals in as many minutes around the half hour mark to give Newbury a commanding four nil lead at the half time break.

Within two minutes of the re-start, Newbury extended their lead through Alex Kovacsova, which was her first goal for the club. Hill was this time the provider. Before Kovacsova then set up Maria Rodrigues to score her first of the season. Six nil now to Newbury with only 49 minutes on the clock. In what must have seemed like a very long second half for Stanford, Newbury really turned on the style and were able to attack at will. Rodrigues added her second of the game, as did Kovacsova shortly after. Before Hill scored her fifth of the game to make it nine nil.

Nicole Beesley popped up with a goal on 71 minutes to take the tally into double figures and then four minutes later, from a Kovacsova corner, Issy Cording found a looping header that dropped just under the bar for Newbury’s 11th goal of the afternoon. Still Newbury were not quite finished with the scoring, as an own goal was turned in following great work on the flank by Lauren Sheldon, who’s crossed forced the error from the Stanford defender inside the six yard box. And then in the game’s final minute, Hill wrapped up proceedings with her sixth and Newbury’s 13th goal.

It was an emphatic victory for Newbury Ladies and takes them into the hat for the second round draw in the County Junior Cup.
