Newbury Ladies Football
Match Report -- Season 2016-17
Southern Region Women's Football League Premier Division
Sunday 6th November 2016
Newbury 0 Marlow 7
Newbury started this game very brightly and looked the more dangerous initially with some great play down the left wing involving Ellie Reed and Tracey Beales. Newbury were rewarded with two early corners, however were unable to convert.

10 minutes in and Marlow started to show more rhythm and threatened the Newbury goal, but the Newbury’s defence stood strong. Newbury responded with a number of shots on goal, however the Marlow keeper looked confident and saved well. Maria Rodrigues won a freekick in a good position, wide on the right just outside the box. Kendall Gilmour swung in a good cross, which just evaded the Newbury players.

Marlow were however first to break the deadlock (1-0), just after 20 mins in, after a good breakdown the left was converted well by the Marlow striker.

The game still looked very even with possession around 50:50 and Newbury playing some good football, Bex Walker having a good spell down the right wing. Newbury had further attacks but were unable to beat the Marlow keeper. Newbury had a close call when a Marlow attack down the right wing ended with a dangerous shot hitting the post. Marlow did however make it 2-0 after the same Marlow striker was able to shoot from 25 yards beating Nicky Isted in goal, with her thunderous shot place just under the bar.

Newbury kept battling and were still in the game. Ellie Reed had a number of chances just before half time however the Marlow keeper was well positioned to save comfortably.

After the restart Newbury were pushing hard for a goal back. An early corner for the home team was just too high for Kendall Gilmour to capitalise on at the back post. Marlow looked threatening on every attack and Nicky Isted in the Newbury goal made some fantastic saves to keep the score to 2-0.

Walker and Reed were combining well down the right hand side, being well supported by Leanne Saunders at right back and had a number of good attacks, Saunders final cross just hitting the top of the net. Newbury had two corners in quick succession, with Kendall Gilmour mishitting a shot and Marlow clearing well.

Newbury were also standing strong in defence, with Lauren Hansen looking good in her new centre back role. Hansen positioned herself well after a good Marlow attack and blocked a shot on the line to keep her team in the game.

This however spelled the start of a wave of attacks from Marlow, who were clinical in their attacks and scored 3 quick goals in a 7 minute period. With one strike going in off the bar and one off the post, giving Isted in goal no chance. Newbury now 5-0 down, knew the game was unrecoverable however they continued to battle and push for a Newbury goal. Nicole Beesley replaced Maria Rodrigues and Issi Cording came on for Lorna Kinder-Parr. Who had both battled hard for Newbury.

In the last 10 minutes Marlow added two more well taken goals to their tally making the final score 7-0, resigning Newbury to another heavy defeat. Newbury had plenty of the possession but were well beaten by a team who made the most of every attack and were clinical in their finishing.

Joint players of the match are Megan Kirby, who was solid as left back and gave her best performance of the season so far, and Tracey Beales, who gave a dynamic attacking performance.
