Newbury Ladies Football
Match Report -- Season 2016-17
Southern Region Women's Football League Premier Division
Sunday 11th September 2016
Southampton Women 5 Newbury 1
Newbury Ladies FC travelled in the league to face Southampton Women, but their endeavours proved fruitless, as the home side collected all 3 points, recording a convincing 5-1 victory.

The visiting team from Berkshire certainly started this match better than they had in their previous outing the week before, showing good defensive discipline in the opening period, despite plenty of attacking threat from Southampton. The game remained even until the 27th minute, when Southampton broke the deadlock following two good moves down the right. They thought they had opened the scoring a minute earlier, but the effort was ruled out for off side. But in an almost repeat move again down Newbury’s left, the cross was this time converted for a one nil lead to Saints.

Ten minutes later and just prior to half time, Southampton converted again to take a comfortable two nil lead into the break.

Despite the hot conditions on the day, Southampton Women started the second half in the same relentless fashion as they had the first, forcing a number of corners in quick succession. Laura Ainscough in the Newbury goal, again pulled off a smart save and in another attempt, the home side rattled the Newbury cross bar. The match was well and truly won however, when Southampton were able to extend their lead in the 54th minute and again in the 55th minute. Four nil now the score-line.

And Southampton took a five nil lead after 67 minutes. On the stoke of full time, Newbury did score a consolation goal through Captain, Caroline Harkness, when she headed in an Ellie Reed corner. The match finished soon after. Southampton Women 5, Newbury Ladies 1.
