8th November 2015
Newbury 3 Woodley Utd 0
The visiting side from Woodley kicked off this encounter and they went on the offensive straight away, forcing two corners inside the opening six minutes. They were unable to capitalise however and Newbury had goalkeeper, Laura Ainscough, to thank, when she pulled off a good save. Newbury appeared to be under the cosh early on, as Woodley saw another chance sail just wide.

Somewhat against the run of play on 22 minutes, Newbury took a one nil lead. This was after Kela Gunnlaugsdottir had won the ball in midfield and then played a pass to Ellie Reed just ahead of her. She turned away from her marker and struck a tremendous shot from 20 yards that sailed into the net on the keeper's left.

Reed had another scoring opportunity just two minutes later, after a good flowing move down the Newbury right, involving Leanne Saunders, Gunnlaugsdottir, Lou Williamson and Reed herself. This time the Woodley keeper was able to make a save. Newbury continued to defend superbly, whilst now also posing more of an attacking threat.

The first Newbury substitution was made just after the half hour, with Maria Rodrigues replacing Nicole Beesley in attack. Just two minutes later and Newbury had doubled their lead. This time Reed turned provider for Gunnlaugsdottir, with a pass laid off to her team mate in a central area. Gunnlaugsdottir's strike was a stunning and thunderous effort from over 36 yards. It was an unstoppable shot, which no goalkeeper would have saved and it was worthy of gracing any stage! Two nil now to the home side.

As half time approached, Newbury's midfield were now well in control, with Caroline Harkness and Sam Atkins both strong and dominant in that area. Woodley attacks were now very few and far between. Displaying the more clinical finishing, Newbury were quietly satisfied with their two goal lead at the break.

Beesley returned to the Newbury line-up after the re-start, but the second half began in much the same way as the first, with Woodley forcing the play and earning a corner early doors. Somehow the Newbury defence managed to scramble it clear, but there then followed a period of intense Woodley United pressure. Atkins had to be replaced on 57 minutes, as she was carrying a knock. Lorna Parr her able replacement.

Whilst Woodley were unable to breach the Newbury rear guard, former Woodley striker, Williamson, was substituted for Newbury in the 63rd minute, with Bex Walker entering the fray. Beesley moved into a more advanced role and she won a free kick for the home side almost immediately. Reed's subsequent cross was headed away to safety by Woodley and they again pressed forward. Megan Kirby, who had been defending resolutely for Newbury in her first start of the season, came under real pressure on the far touch line. She found herself in a heap just off the pitch, following a hefty challenge. Whilst she received treatment, Newbury threw on Kendall Gilmour, to avoid being down to only ten players.

It was to be an inspired substitution, as just three minutes later, Reed was the recipient of a throw. She in turn played a delightful through ball, that split the Woodley defence. Gilmour latched onto the pass and found herself in the clear and through on goal. As the goalkeeper advanced, Gilmour struck a well placed shot that evaded the keeper and nestled into the net for her side's third goal of the day. Three nil now to Newbury after 73 minutes.

With the home side now well in control, Newbury continued to freshen things up, with Rodrigues returning in midfield for Gunnlaugsdottir and Jaz Orton coming on for Saunders. Newbury went in search of further scoring opportunities, with Walker having a great run down the right. She beat the full back, but with the angle narrowed, she played a clever ball back towards the edge of the area. Sadly a Woodley defender was able to nip in and divert the ball away.

As the clock wound down, the three points would remain in Newbury, who can be extremely proud of their performance. It was Newbury's third league victory of the campaign and their third clean sheet. All three Newbury goals were sheer brilliance and a joy for the spectators to have witnessed.
