Newbury started the match brightly and dominated in many areas of the pitch and were unlucky not to go ahead on a number of occasions. However, the turning point was when Headington began to take control of the midfield and on 39 minutes some concerted pressure resulted in Newbury going one down when the midfield failed to pick up their markers.

5 minutes later and the Ladies went 2-0 down when the referee judged that Chloe Hunt in the Newbury goal brought down the Headington striker in the penalty box. It was clear that the supporters felt that the Headington lady had dived and that Chloe never touched her! More drama was to follow when Chloe saved the penalty but the referee claimed a Newbury player encroached and the retaken penalty was put away.

After the break, Newbury just couldn’t find the spark to get their play going. The Newbury management of Tony McConnon, Pete Atkins and Ifor Sheldon just couldn’t work out what was wrong. With about 20 minutes to go, Karen Churchill, in her final match, suffered a knock to her knee and had to have some treatment from the sideline. When she returned to the fray, Karen clearly could not continue up front so dropped into midfield. This was the turning point of the match. All of a sudden Karen controlled the midfield. She made pass after pass to the forwards and in the 87th minute, Lily Chubb was set free and was upended on the corner of the box and Leanne Saunders placed a fabulous penalty to the right of the keeper to make it 2-1. Unfortunately, despite a number of chances to the home side, there was not enough time left for Newbury to do anything else to alter the score.
