A Newbury Ladies XI travelled to face Marlborough Town Ladies on Sunday 21st August. This was the first friendly fixture of the season for Newbury Ladies FC and gave them a chance to hand debuts to several new players that have joined the club.
Newbury put Marlborough under pressure right from the kick off, gaining possession after good pressure from Ellie Reed. Leanne Crease then played a great ball down the line to Ruby Oliver, who beat the Marlborough defender before supplying a cross that Ellie Reed slid in at the back post to finish. The opening goal for Newbury coming inside the first 3 minutes.
Although Marlborough Town did have one half-chance during the opening exchanges, Newbury continued to have good possession and posed nearly all of the attacking threat. Naomi Purvis and Gemma Povey were marshalling the Newbury back line well in the heart of defence, with Lorna Parr supporting play and starting attacks from the full back position.
After 20 minutes, Newbury went two nil up following an excellent overhead finish, again from Ellie Reed, her second of the afternoon. Newbury controlled the rest of the first half, playing their passing game with a good tempo, retaining possession and showing a real competitive edge. Their third goal coming just before the half time whistle, with Ruby Oliver sending a looping shot sailing over the head of the Marlborough goalkeeper. Three nil to Newbury at half time.
The second half began with Newbury making several changes and utilising their squad to its fullest. This did give some of the initiative back to Marlborough, but the Newbury defence still held firm, with Honor Ramos in goal having a relatively untroubled afternoon.
On 78 minutes Leanne Crease cut in from the right wing and unleashed a shot that found the bottom corner. With Newbury now four goals to the good, their next attack saw them extend their lead even further, when Jenny Petrylak burst through from midfield and latched onto a delightful lay-off from Bex Walker to make it five nil.
Although a Marlborough breakaway in the dying stages of the match saw them hit the woodwork, Newbury held onto their clean sheet. Before Ellie Reed completed her hat-trick, wrapping up the scoring and making it six nil to Newbury. A well organised performance from Newbury Ladies, which bodes very well for the new season ahead.
