Newbury Ladies Football
Match Report -- Season 2011-12
Southern Region Women's Football League Division 1 South
Sunday 8th January 2012
Newbury Ladies 3 Marlow Ladies 0
Newbury Ladies were keen to start 2012 with a bang and they almost scored straight from the kick off in this league encounter, with Ellie Reed racing onto a loose ball that the Marlow defence had failed to clear. Her effort though was palmed away to safety by the visiting keeper.

With both sides getting to grips with the game, much of the play was in the central areas, until on 15 minutes Newbury conceded a foul 25 yards from their goal. The resulting Marlow free kick was deflected high off the Newbury wall and over for a corner.

Newbury’s defence, superbly marshalled by Sophie Self, were able to clear the in-swinging corner, but only to the edge of the penalty area. As the Marlow midfielder was charged down, her shot flew well wide of the right hand post.

The next passage of play saw Newbury threaten again, this time with a wonderful cross field ball played by Reed to Ruby Oliver wide on the right. She drove towards the Marlow goal and unleashed a low shot that was heading just inside the near post. Marlow’s goalkeeper was again equal to the effort and she turned the shot behind for a Newbury corner.

On the half hour mark Newbury captain, Leanne Creese stepped up to take a free kick from wide on the left. Her direct shot was expertly tipped round the post by the Marlow keeper to give Newbury a further corner kick. This time taken by Oliver, who’s initial cross was cleared, but she was on hand again to float in another dangerous cross. Reed flicked a header on and Newbury striker, Jenny Petrylak sprung the offside trap and found herself 8 yards from goal and completely unmarked. She coolly finished with a low shot, which although the Marlow keeper got a hand to, she was unable to keep out of the bottom right hand corner of the net.

1-0 to Newbury.

Just 3 minutes after the re-start and Newbury had doubled their lead. With seemingly nothing on, top scorer Ruby Oliver picked up the ball and smashed a shot from 30 yards that sailed over the goalkeeper’s head, but fell just under the cross bar – a wonderful strike to make it 2-0 to the home side.

Newbury were now really enjoying their football and were in full control of the match. A floated pass over the top by Sophie Self, allowed Petrylak to again run through one on one with the Marlow keeper. This time her effort whistling agonisingly wide of the left post. The closing stages of the first half saw Newbury creating further chances, with shots from Oliver, Petrylak and midfielder Lily Chubb, with the Marlow goalkeeper being by far the busier and grateful to hear the half time whistle.

Marlow kicked off the second half, but they were very soon in trouble when Newbury’s Ellie Reed found herself through on goal from a more central position. She forced another fine save from the goalkeeper. Next Reed tried a looping shot from distance, which again the keeper did well to reach and tip over the bar.

Newbury’s midfield of Naomi Purvis and Lorna Parr continued in the same vein as in the first half, offering fantastic cover and support for their defence and really shackling any creative threat that the visitors may have posed. Although Marlow showed plenty of endeavour, Newbury remained on top and kept the visiting chances to a minimum.

With just 5 minutes of the match remaining, Newbury sealed their victory with a very well worked attack down the left flank. After a marauding run from Reed, she whipped in a cross that was superbly met on the half volley by Ruby Oliver, after she had ghosted into the box. Oliver had timed her run to perfection and finished in style, to take her personal goal tally into double figures for the season.

It was a fantastic 3-0 victory for Newbury Ladies, 3 valuable points gained and their first clean sheet of the 2011/12 season.
