Newbury Ladies Football
Match Report -- Season 2011-12
Southern Region Women's Football League Division 1 South
Sunday 27th November 2011
Basingstoke Town 9 Newbury Ladies 1
The First Team of Newbury Ladies FC travelled to Winklebury to take on Southern Region Division One table toppers, Basingstoke Town. The match started fairly evenly, with neither goalkeeper tested in the early exchanges. Gradually though, Basingstoke's midfield began to take control and exert some pressure, although the finishing from the home side's strikers was wayward.

Newbury did create some first half opportunities through some neat interplay between Lorna Parr and Leanne Creese, who both had shots from distance. But it took 30 minutes before the deadlock was broken, and it was Basingstoke who took the initiative following a break down the Newbury right, with the resulting cross ending in a close range finish at the back post.

Just 5 minutes later Newbury started to believe they could find a way back into the contest, when left winger, Ellie Reed cut in and shot from 30 yards. Her effort evading the goalkeeper, but coming back off the cross bar and frustratingly the wrong side of the goal line, before Basingstoke's defence cleared the danger.

Almost immediately Basingstoke rallied and pushed forward again. They attacked down the left with purpose and found a menacing cross that was met sweetly and converted to make it to 2 nil to the home side. With not much time remaining in the first half, Newbury regrouped and went in search of a breakthrough. Naomi Purvis sprayed a long pass forward that drew the Basingstoke goalkeeper well off her line, but she was beaten to the ball by Newbury's Jenny Petrylak. As the ball bobbled loose to Ellie Reed, the unguarded goal beckoned, but she was unable to find the target with her shot going agonisingly just wide of the right hand post.

Had that gilt-edge chance been converted, Newbury would have found themselves at 2-1 and right back in the match. As it was, right on the stroke of half time, Basingstoke extended their lead to 3 nil when one of their midfielders burst through from deep to fire a low shot into the bottom corner.

The second half began with a string of Basingstoke corners, but the Newbury defence were able to deal with these and stay in the game. On 65 minutes, Newbury had reason to cheer when Ruby Oliver latched onto a pass and she finished well from 12 yards. The score line now at 3-1.

Unfortunately for Newbury, this breach of the Basingstoke defence seemed to sting the home side and they drove forward again straight from the restart. Just four minutes later and Basingstoke scored to make it 4-1, knocking the stuffing out of their visitors. In the next 10 minute spell, three further Basingstoke goals were added to give them a 7-1 lead and really put the match out of Newbury's sight.

The final 5 minutes of the game, saw two long range efforts sail over the head of the Newbury keeper and into the roof of the net. A 9-1 defeat the final score line for Newbury, with Basingstoke Town showing just why they have been leading the division all season.
