Newbury Ladies Football
Match Report -- Season 2011-12
Southern Region Women's Football League
Jubilee Cup Quarter Final
Sunday 22nd April 2012
Locks Heath 0 Newbury Ladies 1
The game opened quite positively for Newbury with an early attack on the Locks Heath goal. In the early stages it was quite even. However it was soon to change. There was a strong wind blowing diagonally across the pitch towards Newbury's right back position and Locks Heath started to look really dangerous down both wings. Newbury however had the best opening chance after 7 minutes when after a great run by Nicole Beesley down the left and a cross, Lorna Parr's looping shot from about 25 yds just went over the bar.

This was followed immediately by a string of corners for Locks Heath. Newbury then had another break involving Caz Harkness, Lily Chubb and Leanne Creese but the full back managed to clear the ball as Leanne cut in dangerously towards the goal. 5 minutes later Newbury built up more pressure with 2 excellent crosses from Leanne Creese. Between these attacks Newbury's defence had a lot to do but were looking really solid, clearing well all attacks down both flanks. After 24 minutes Nicole Beesley had a powerful run down the left and was eventually bought down for a free kick near the corner flag. Leanne Creese’s shot went over the bar. This was followed by a Locks Heath attack which lead to the centre forward breaking through between the Newbury centre backs and she advanced menacingly towards the Newbury goal. Goalkeeper Chloe Hunt saw the danger immediately and came out towards the attacker forcing the shot wide which struck the post.

Sophie Self then made an unusual break out of defence striding at speed into the opponents half which resulted in a corner to Newbury. Leanne Creese’s corner was headed wide by Caz Harkness. Locks Heath resumed their attacking. On one of these attacks Locks Heath were caught offside and protested which somewhat distracted them. The resultant free kick was headed on by Lorna Parr to the lively Lily Chubb, who passed the ball past the keeper for an unexpected 1-0 lead after 34 minutes. 5 minutes before half time Lily Chubb was involved again with a break down the right crossing for Sarah Haughey to shoot wide. Lily Chubb, Caz Harkness and Leanne Creese again combined resulting in a Leanne Creese cross collected by the keeper.

Locks Heath again looked dangerous in the minutes before the break but Newbury’s defence continued to defend well.

As expected Locks Heath came out for the second half very strongly and pressed Newbury back towards their goal. After 5 minutes Chloe Hunt made a fantastic save from a ball going into the top right hand corner of the net. One handedly pushing the ball away for a corner. This pressure was continuous for the first 15 minutes of the 2nd half. In a rare moment inside the Locks Heath half Leanne Creese pounced on a loose pass and drove at full tilt towards the keeper. Unfortunately her powerful shot continued to rise and went over the bar. 5 minutes later Nicole Beesley also picked up a loose ball, unfortunately shooting wide. In an unusual game Newbury could easily have been 3-0 up, which would have defied the territorial statistics.

Locks Heath seemed to be losing their way a bit now. Both the players and the management were getting frustrated at their inability to score.

Between the 75th and 85th minutes Locks Heath pressed relentless and at times there were 22 players in the Newbury half with the Locks Heath Goalkeeper standing on the halfway line and Lily Chubb who was the highest up the pitch no more than 30 yards from the Newbury goal. Newbury simply would not let the ball go into the net. In this period Locks Heath had 3 dangerously positioned free kicks just outside the box which went wide of the goal and several corners. This period was only relieved by a break involving Caz Harkness, Lily Chubb and Nicole Beesley, which was followed by a further siege on the Newbury goal with another dangerous free kick, a corner and 3 more shots in the remaining minutes, one over the bar, one landed on top of the net and the final one saved by Chloe Hunt.

The final whistle brought an end to one of the most fantastic rear guard actions Newbury Ladies have ever been involved in. All 11 players had committed everything they had to holding on to the one goal advantage to get to the semi-final.
