Match Report -- Season 2011-12
FA Women’s Cup First Qualifying Round
2nd October 2011
Aylesbury Utd 1 Newbury 5
The First Team Squad of Newbury Ladies travelled away to Aylesbury United on one of the hottest days of the year, to begin their first Cup adventure of the new season.

The tie began with Aylesbury creating the first attack and forcing a corner, but the Newbury defence dealt with it comfortably, clearing the danger and they grew in confidence from there. After 10 minutes Skipper Leanne Crease beat a player on the right flank and sent over a beautiful cross into the Aylesbury penalty area. Although the cross was too high for Ruby Oliver, her fellow striker, Jenny Petrylak was unmarked at the far post, but she put her volleyed effort over the Aylesbury bar.

Newbury began to gain more and more possession and soon, Ruby Oliver pounced on a defensive blunder to drive through one on one with the Aylesbury goalkeeper, but fired her shot just wide. Both Petrylak and Oliver were working very well up front, terrorising the Aylesbury back line and putting them under real pressure. With Petrylak making a real nuisance of herself, she again forced an Aylesbury defender into a mistake, allowing Oliver to gain possession and again tear through towards goal. This time her run took her wider and she shot from distance, but again the effort sailed just wide of the post.

With just 16 minutes played, Newbury gained their first corner of the match, allowing Gemma Povey to venture forward from centre half. As the cross came in, Aylesbury were unable to clear and Povey stabbed the ball towards goal. This effort was blocked, but looped up and Povey, following in, sent a header into the roof of the net to open the scoring. One nil to Newbury.

After 25 minutes Newbury doubled their advantage, making it 2 nil, after good pressure from Lorna Parr in central midfield. The ball broke to Ruby Oliver and her looping shot from 25 yards found the top corner. With Newbury now totalling dominating, they scored a third goal within a minute when Parr played a great through ball to slice open the Aylesbury defence. Oliver ran onto the pass and coolly slotted home her second of the game and Newbury’s third.

As the first half drew to a close, both teams were showing signs of fatigue in the extreme heat, although Newbury’s fitness levels had fared much better overall. Newbury did have one lapse in concentration and following a stray pass in a central area Aylesbury broke through and grabbed an untidy goal to get themselves on the score sheet, making it 3-1 at half time.

With no changes at the break, Newbury began the second half with real intent, determined to use possession wisely and making the ball do all the work. They gained an early corner and with Oliver seeking a hat-trick, her near post header was well parried by the Aylesbury goalkeeper. The ball fell on the edge of the area to Petrylak, who played a square pass into the path of Sophie Self, who arrived from deep. Her long range shot was just too high and soared over the cross bar.

A further Newbury corner saw Petrylak denied, after her header was blocked on the goal line by an Aylesbury defender and cleared away. Petrylak had another opportunity soon after, with a great Newbury counter-attacking move, following a cleared Aylesbury corner. Crease bringing the ball out of defence and playing an excellent long range pass down the line, which was collected by Oliver. She turned and played a precision through ball to Petrylak, who had found space for herself in between the Aylesbury centre backs. Through on goal with only the Aylesbury keeper to beat, her shot was well saved. She did however convert a harder chance 5 minutes later, when lobbing the goalkeeper from the edge of the area to stretch Newbury’s lead and make it 4-1. It was a well taken effort and a goal for Petrylak to reward all of her previous hard work and tireless running.

The new look Newbury midfield was performing very well, with any hint of an Aylesbury forward move, being broken up superbly by Naomi Purvis in the holding role. As well giving good protection to her defence, Purvis was also linking up well with her midfield partner, Parr, allowing Parr to press forward and support Newbury’s good attacking play.

After a good run down the left flank by Zoe Lambden midway through the half, she sent in a great cross after beating the Aylesbury full back. Parr timed her run to perfection, arriving in the Aylesbury penalty area to meet the ball sweetly. The Aylesbury keeper saved very well from 5 yards, with Parr’s follow-up effort also blocked. Newbury were unlucky not to have added to their goal tally and were now in total control of proceedings.

With 15 minutes left, Newbury brought on Emma Newport for her debut, with Lambden the outgoing player. It was soon 5-1 to Newbury, with Parr again surging forward and receiving a through pass from Petrylak. She took the ball round the last Aylesbury defender and was through on goal. She took her goal with aplomb, superbly slotting the ball past the stranded goalkeeper and into the bottom right hand corner. This finished a stylish Newbury display to send them comfortably through to the next round.
