Newbury 4 Banbury Utd 1
Newbury made an encouraging start to their league season with an excellent win over Banbury Utd at home at Hungerford Town ground where Newbury are playing this season. Last season Newbury only managed to take 1 point from Banbury so a comfortable win 4-1 was very welcome. The first half had Newbury playing up the slope with a relatively strong win on their backs. Newbury dominated the early play much of which was in the Banbury half. Kaz Churchill scored the first goal, after 30 minutes, from close in, after Banbury failed to clear a Leanne Creese cross from wide on the right. Newbury continued to dominate with Leanne becoming more dominant on the wing. The second goal came 10 minutes later when Neat Kent rose to score with a superb glancing header into the far corner of the net from another excellent cross from Leanne.
The start of the second half saw Banbury come into the game and, for a while, it seemed they might get back on terms with Newbury looking somewhat jaded on the hot and sunny afternoon. However Banbury never really looked like they would score. The balance was restored when Kaz Churchill put away another close range shot again from a Leanne cross from the right. 5 minutes later Newbury conceded a penalty when one of their players was brought down in the area. The penalty was well taken giving keeper Laura Ainscough no chance. Elli Reed completed the scoring with a fine run into the box shooting in off the far post following an interchange of passes with Neat Kent.
