Newbury Ladies Football
Match Report -- Season 2008-9
Southern Region Women's Football League Division 1
21st September 2008
Newbury 6 Oxford City A 2
Newbury opened their league campaign this season with a convincing win over Oxford City. This was a must win game for Newbury in their quest for promotion this season. Newbury has 2 teams but there were a number of players unavailable this week for various reasons and when one of the team withdrew late on Sunday with sickness it left Newbury with only 10 players. The team also fielded 2 players who were new to first team football one of whom, Holly Phillips, was playing her first game for Newbury.

Newbury took a little while to settle playing with 3 at the back with Leanne Creese, normally a right midfielder, at right back and Laura Ainscough, normally a goalkeeper at left back. As Newbury started to settle it was Elli Reed who opened the scoring with a well aimed shot to beat the competent Oxford goalkeeper. This encouraged Newbury who were rewarded with 2 goals by newcomer Holly Phillips before halftime.

Newbury continued in the second half with an early goal by Elli Reed to give them a 4-0 lead. Oxford City then came back into the game and were rewarded with 2 goals as Newbury relaxed somewhat. The second of these focussed the players who struck back immediately by Holly Phillips for her hattrick to make the score 5-2 which killed off any hope that the opposition had of getting back into the game. Caz Harkness was rewarded for her efforts in central midfield with an excellent goal to take the final score to 6-2.
