Newbury Ladies Reserves Football
Match Report -- Season 2007-8
Thames Valley Counties Women's Football League
Division 3
16th December 2007
Chinnor A 0 Newbury 1
It was a case of lucky win for the Newbury nine as that was all the players they could muster after late withdrawals and holidays.

But Newbury started brightly despite Chinnor’s number superiority and after several skirmishes in midfield Hayley Giles went close with a shot just past the post after a great through ball by Stacey Richardson. Stacey then went close herself with a shot across the goal from the edge of the box. Stacey then soon after forced the keeper into a save that she could not hold but unfortunately for Newbury nobody was close enough to shot the ball home. Despite the numbers Newbury were playing the better football and looked a constant threat going forward and Chinnor seemed to have no answer to Newbury’s intelligent football which the whole team were involved in. Then Hayley Giles broke away and shot which the Chinnor goalkeeper did well to hold with midfielder Tewsday Herbert waiting to pounce out on any loose ball. Just before the break Stacey Richardson and Hayley Giles both went close again and Chinnor must have been relieved not to have gone in a goal down at half time.

But Newbury pressure paid off a minute after the break when Hayley Giles again sped away and beat the chinnor keeper with a fantastic lob come shot Chinnor now realised they really had a game on their hands and now pursued forward looking for an equaliser and when a Chinnor player forced her way into the box a goal looked likely but Lauren Sheldon the Newbury keeper dived full length across the goal to divert the goal round shot for a corner.

Newbury’s defence now came under pressure but Lucy Ward and Gemma Ball were firm and both full back positions and also pushing forward at every opportunity to support the attacking threat of Newbury and with centre backs partnership of Lorna Parr and Sam McConnon looking rock solid at the back Chinnor’s opportunities were limited. Newbury still pushed forward and Stacey Richardson cut across the midfield beating for Chinnor players to unleash a shot that beat the Chinnor all ends up but came crashing back into play of the crossbar.

Tewsday Herbert playing her first game in midfield played a great cross field ball for Hayley Giles to again threaten and with skipper Sue Hewett anchoring the midfield and spreading the play Newbury continued to create more chances Tewsday Herbert forced the Chinnor keeper to make a fingertip save which saved a certain second goal and still Newbury pushed forward with Hayley Giles forcing the keeper to save and also hitting the post as well.

Manager Tony McConnon said it was a fantastic result against a good Chinnor side and his players have given everything and played exceptional football as well.
