Newbury Ladies Football
Match Report -- Season 2007-8
Southern Region Women's Football League Division 1
2nd December 2007
Carterton 1 Newbury Ladies 2
Newbury resumed winning ways in the league on a wet pitch in an almost gale force wind blowing straight down the pitch. This was also the first game for 2 new signings, Line Ejersen and Kasmin Forbes. Line was playing in central defence while Kasmin started on the right side of midfield. Caz Harkness won the toss and elected to play with the wind. The hope was that Newbury would build a substantial lead by halftime. Kendall opened the scoring after 2 minutes with an excelent shot over the keepers head, however the wind made it extremely difficult to hold the ball up and whenever it was played through it gathered pace and reached the keeper rather than the attacker. Carterton were not particularly well organised but they were very committed and shut down the Newbury players very quickly and physically. This and the difficult conditions prevented Newbury from asserting their normal skilfull football. Newbury had several opportunities, Kasmin had a high shot fingertipped onto the crossbar by a desperate retreating keeper, unfortunatley no Newbury player was on hand to finish the job. Caz Harkness also hit the post. With 5 minutes to go to halftime Coach Ed Burlison switched Elli Reed and Kasmin to attack. The change of formation was immediately rewarded with a goal for Kasmin who was set up by Elli. A 2 goal lead at halftime at least reduced the stress of playing into the wind in the second half.

The second half saw the rain return and the wind increase. this made Newbury goalkicks almost impossible. 15 yards beyond the box was about the limit. This was not helped by the referee's insistence on restarting the game with dropped balls which were kicked by Carterton over the goal line to give Newbury the ball after what seemed like a constant run of injuries to Carterton's players. Having said all this it was Newbury who had most of the scoring opportunities in the second half. Karen had several chances which went just wide including an excellent save by the keeper. Carterton were having similar problems to those of Newbury in the first half. their few attacking moves mostly resulted in the ball running through to Chloe Hunt in goal. Chloe was unlucky 8 minutes from the end when she failed to hold a difficult low curling shot and a Carterton forward, who was following up, had a simple tap in to make the last few minutes very tense for Newbury.
