| Newbury resumed winning ways this week in an expected victory over Banbury United. It was not though the greatest victory with Newbury looking generally lethargic. Banbury in contrast were very lively but as they were fielding only 10 players Newbury should have made much more of this game. Having said all this in truth, apart from the penalty awarded to Banbury in the 90th minute, Banbury never looked like scoring and Chloe Hunt, back in goal for the first time in a month, had virtually nothing to do until she was given 15 minutes on the pitch when Lisa Duncan went into goal. Newbury opened quite confidently and went 2 up within 10 minutes first when Karen Churchill scored from within a yard following several shots which the Banbury keeper scrambled away. Colleen Geis was next to score when put in by an excellent flick through the defence by Karen, Colleen tucked away a neat shot past the keeper. Newbury was winning lots of ball in midfield and most of their attacks in the first half came from the very lively Leanne Creese who had the beating of the left back every time. Unfortunately most of the crosses were dealt with by the excellent keeper who was not put under enough pressure by Newbury. Half an hour into the half Karen scored Newbury’s 3rd but this seemed to cause Newbury to withdraw from the attack rather than press home their advantage.
The second half was uninspiring apart from Karen scoring her hatrick and Colleen taking another excellent goal and some excellent attacking from Nita Kent. Banbury were rewarded for their second half efforts with a penalty awarded despite the Newbury players protests when Gemma Povey made what appeared at first sight to be a well timed tackle just inside the area. The referee indicated that he thought she had taken the player before the ball.
