Newbury Ladies Football
Match Report -- Season 2007-8
Southern Region Women's Football League Division 1
28th October 2007
MK Wanderers 6 Newbury 2
Newbury played this crucial match against the Divison 1 league leaders with only 8 players. A series of last minute problems left the team without a goalkeeper, a defender and a central midfielder. None the less the remaining players put on a fantastic performance. Playing with the strong breeze the 8 were to dominate the opening period and were 2-0 in the first 15 minutes with goals by Caz Harkness and Elli Reed. With 3 extra players MK did have scoring opportunities but their frantic efforts were kept at bay by the defence and when necessary by centre forward Kendall Gilmour who had taken the gloves for this game. It was actually against the run of play when MK scored their opening goal some 35 minutes into the game. It looked like Newbury would hold the lead when unfortunately MK scored on the stroke of half time.

Early in the second half Newbury had another opportunity to take the lead when Gemma Povey cleared to Leanne Creese who played it onto Elli Reed whose shot was palmed away for a corner. Soon after this Newbury failed to clear the box and conceeded a somewhat soft goal. MK scored 3 more goals as the valient eight tired. There was no doubt who played the better football throughout the match. Hopefully the 3 points conceeded won't be crucial at the end of the season.
