Newbury 8 Newport Pagnell 1

| The first league match of the season got off to an encouraging start with an 8-1 win against Newport Pagnell who were promoted from the Thames Valley League this season.Newbury started the game at a high tempo immediately applying pressure to the opponents goal. The opening goal was scored by the captain and centre back Gemma Povey from a corner on the left by Leanne Creese. Gemma scored with a left foot strike just inside the post when the defence failed to clear the ball from the area. Newbury went 2 up within a minute when Kendall Gilmour struck home a cross form Leanne this time form the right. Newport kept up the pressure and after 20 minutes went 3 up when Elli Reed picked up a poor cleanance by the keeper and shot low to the keepers right. Just before half time Kendall and Elli scored again to make the score 5-0.
At the start of the second half Newbury immediately went 6 up when Caz Harkness had a simple tap in from a Karen Churchill cross to the far post. Newbury seemed to relax and allowed Newport Pagnell to come into the game which was far more even. Newport Pagnell were rewarded for their efforts after a defensive error by Newbury allowed them to score. In the last 20 minutes Newbury played with 10 but they raised their game and Caz scored her second and with moments to go Karen Churchill had a fine solo effort beating 3 players and the keeper placing the ball into the corner of the net.
