Match Report -- Season 2007-8
Pre-season friendly
29th July 2007
Reading Royals Ladies 1 Newbury Ladies 3
Newbury had the best of their first fixture of the new season playing against Reading Royals of the Women's Premier League Southern Division in a pre-season friendly at Lord Wandsworth College, Odiham. The game opened in a fairly even manner but it was Newbury who settled earlier playing with a heavily packed midfield with three at the back and one up front. This unusual formation for Newbury effectively gave them control of the first half but there were few early chances for either team. When the chances did come Newbury took theirs with much more effect with striker Kendall Gilmour playing in midfield behind the sole attacker Kaz Churchill. Kendall struck 2 excellent goals, one from deep on the left and the other coming in from wide right after picking up a loose ball. Reading’s excellent keeper had no chance with either shot.

The second half saw Newbury revert to a conventional 4-4-2 and the pace of the game increased. Reading got back into the game early in the half when they scrambled a goal in a crowded penalty area. However midway through the half a well struck free kick, from outside the box, by Kendall Gilmour was mis-handled by the the unlucky keeper and Caz Harkness was on hand to tap the ball in from within 6 yard box to cap an excellent game for her and the rest of the Newbury team. Reading failed to convert some opportunities late in the game but is was a well deserved and fair result for a well organised Newbury Team.
