| Newbury opened the game brightly and were 1-0 up within 10 minutes when a move starting deep on the right saw the ball played out of defence and Karen Churchill releasing Elli Reed with an excellent diagonal ball wide left. Elli approached the advancing keeper and beat her with an excellent shot over her head and just under the bar. Newbury were however unable to take advantage of this good start as Reading started to gain more possession. The game was quite even but neither team were making many chances. Reading probably had more opportunities as Newbury was having difficulty coping with the wide formation of the 2 Reading attackers. The central players were coming from deep and there was confusion in the Newbury defence and central midfield as to who should be picking up these players. None the less Jenny Cox in goal coped admirably with the few Reading shots on goal. 10 minutes before halftime however Reading were awarded a penalty which neither side understood, both teams were lining up for a corner when the referee said it was a penalty for an offence by unseen by either side. This made the score 1-1 at half time.
In the second half Newbury reorganised somewhat to counteract Reading’s attacking formation. Neither side had many scoring opportunities until a cross by Caz Harkness set up an excellent shooting opportunity for Elli Reed in front of the goal. Unfortunately she mishit the ball. The game looked like heading for extra time when a Reading shot saw the Newbury keeper palm a shot onto the bar. The rebound hit her on the back but still did not cross the line her scrambled save went to a Reading attacker whose shot hit the post and just crossed the line. Reading had all the possession in the last 10 minutes and overall probably deserved the win. The league matches between these 2 teams should be just as close.
