Newbury Ladies Football
Match Report -- Season 2007-8
Berks and Bucks Cup 1st Round
23rd Sept 2007
Ascot United 0 Newbury 17
Newbury completely dominated this match from the outset and were 7-0 up within 17 minutes. The instruction to the team was to win the game in the first 20 minutes and clearly this was achieved. Kendall Gilmour, Karen Churchill and Colleen Geis each scored 2 goals goals with Leanne Creese adding a seventh. Much of the distribution for these goals was delivered by Caz Harkness who was dominating central midfield. After this opening blast it wasn’t really that Ascot got back into the game but rather that Newbury relaxed somewhat and the goal tally slowed down. With more clinical finishing it is inconceivable what the score might have been. However Karen still managed to score 2 more with minutes to go before halftime. Elli Reed went off with a strained leg and with substitute Sue Hewett coming on Newbury switched the formation to 3 at the back. Right back Kelly Doe, moving into midfield, took advantage of this to make it 10-0 with close range shot from an excellent Kendall Gilmour cross from wide on the left.

Kelly Doe’s new found freedom led her to score 3 more goals within the first 8 minutes of the second half including one excellent shot over the keeper which would have been unstoppable by almost any keeper. Leanne Creese came off as a precaution leaving Newbury to play the last 25 minutes with 10 players. Kendall and Karen each added another 2 goals to their tally leaving Karen with 6, Kendall and Kelly with 4 apiece.

Newbury face a much more serious challenge this Sunday playing against Burnham in the FA Women’s Cup 2nd Qualifying round. Interestingly both Newbury and Burnham have beaten Newport Pagnell in the league this season by the same score 8-1. A tight and even game is thus to be expected.
