AFC Newbury Girls Under 14 Football
Match Report -- Season 2006-7
North East Hants Youth League - Girls Under 14
15th April 2007
AFC Newbury 1 Fleet Town Reds 0
Newbury boosted their chances of winning the league with a well deserved win over their nearest rivals Fleet. The home team started well and from the kick off took the game to the visitors. They were really up for it and were first to every loose ball and tackle. The pressure began to tell and Fleet found it hard to hold on to the ball and build any kind of rhythm. Newbury’s first chance came when a good move down the right saw Victoria Summerfield break into the box and with just the sprawling keeper to beat she chipped the ball over her but the ball bounced the wrong side of the post. Newbury were really in the ascendancy and Ruby Oliver and then Hazel Beesley saw good opportunities go begging when they both had time time to pick their spots but both saw their shots from just inside the box fly over the crossbar. Newbury were edging closer and just before the break Sophie Harvey thought she had scored when she rounded the keeper and she shot for goal but as the ball was about to cross the line a desperate lunge from Fleets player of the match Noella, stretched out a leg and managed to divert the ball wide and off for a corner.

The second half saw the home team continue to press for a breakthrough but Fleet were standing firm and the game soon became an end to end but with neither team able to get a clear shot with both teams defending very well. The turning point came when Fleet won a free kick on the edge of the box after a clumsy tackle. The free kick was well taken and was heading for the bottom corner and although she saw it late Honor Ramos dived and it was another outstretched foot, which stopped the ball from crossing the line. From that save the home team went straight up the other end with a swift counter attack and when Sophie Harvey’s was put through her shot was initially saved but the ball bounced behind the keeper and she was on hand to bundle the ball over the line with the keeper still on the floor and the defence beat for the first time. The visitors stirred and began to play but with very little time left on the clock. Honor came off her line and made a few more good saves in the box in the closing minutes and in the last minute Fleets captain broke through and she was one on one with Honor (Newbury’s player of the match) and it looked like a certain goal but as she rounded Honor, she again stretched out a leg and made an excellent challenge on the edge of the box and the ball flew clear and safe. The whistle blew seconds later and Newbury earned a well deserved win and it puts them 7 points clear with only a few games to go but Fleet do have games in hand which they now have to win.
