AFC Newbury Girls Under 14 Football
Match Report -- Season 2006-7
North East Hants Youth League - Girls Under 14
18th March 2007
Reading Girls 2 AFC Newbury 2
Newbury travelled to Reading with only a few games left to play, knowing that a win or draw would secure them second place. They lost the toss and the home team chose to play with the wind which was blowing a gale. The home team started well and Newbury were hemmed in their own half unable to clear the lines. The visitors didn't improve and good football from Reading began to pull the visitors apart. Luckily some great saving tackles from Chelsea Allen and Naomi Purvis and some good saves from Honor Ramos kept Newbury in the game. Midway through the half Reading won their first corner and when the ball was crossed at the near post it deflected off a defender and when it dropped the home team were first to react and slid the ball home from close range. This didn't wake the visitors and within minutes they were two down when a good move down the right ended with their striker breaking free and firing home from the edge of the box into the far corner with Honor beaten. Newbury did begin to play finally and their first attack came with a long ball from Chelsea which was laid off by Sophie Harvey to Ruby Oliver on the right wing and as she approached the box with the goalie off her line she chipped the keeper but unfortunately bouncing the wrong side of the post. Half time came with the home team still on top and it gave the visitors time to regroup and catch their breath.

Newbury did need the break and started the second half refreshed and with the wind now on their side. They began well and for the first time began to string some good passes together and for once the home team looked shaky at the back. Chelsea and Naomi controlled the defence well and were first to everything and this confidence spread throughout the team. Victoria Summerfield now upfront and was a real threat with her pace and after some good work from Ruby down the left after a goal mouth scramble and with the keeper on the floor Victoria turned on the penalty spot and fired home in a crowded box. The away team was now lifted and although on top the home team defended stoutly and as the half draw on it looked like the visitors may not get the breakthrough they deserved. When Newbury won a corner it was swung in low by Ruby towards the near post and it avoided everyone and sneaked into the goal via a deflection off a sprawling keeper. The last few minutes was end to end but neither team was able to take advantage and with tackles flying in it ended a heated affair but when the whistle went it was Newbury who were smiling after confirming runners up spot. Player of the match went to Chelsea Allen who was consistently solid from start to finish.
