Match Report -- Season 2006-7
North East Hants Youth League - Girls Under 14
28th January 2007
AFC Newbury 6 Hartley Whitney 3
Newbury continued their unbeaten home record and stayed top of the league with a convincing win over Hartley Whitney in their first home game of the year. From the kick off the home team broke down the left wing and when the cross came in, it was deflected behind for a corner from the same side. Ruby Oliver whose run had started it all took the corner and it went high and long to the far post and was met by Lucy Mortimer who stuck a knee out to guide the ball home with only a minute on the clock. The game settled down and both teams shared position and it was the visitors turn to mount some pressure. Newbury looked vulnerable at the back and with Honor Ramos out through injury it was Rhiannon Gainlall who covered in her absence.

They equalised came in the tenth minute when a long ball down the left caught Hazel Beesley out and before Naomi Purvis could get across to block the shot the striker had cut in and beat the keeper before she had time to get off her line and narrow the angle. This woke up the home team up, who had been quiet since scoring and they began to put some good football together and they would have regained the lead but for some good saves from the visiting keeper. From one of these saves Newbury again had a corner in the twenty fifth minute and again it was from the left. Katie Saunders swung it in and when it was only half cleared to the edge of the box, Elizabeth Swallow met it falling and hit a stunning half volley with her right foot and the ball fizzed in past everyone. The home team were lifted and two goals came along in quick succession both from long balls. The first was a ball over the top which Sophie Harvey latched onto picking the ball up by the touchline and with all the defenders already beat she cut in and with no one to pass to she shot from a very narrow angle and the ball flew between the keepers legs to make it three. The fourth was similar but this time it was Ruby Oliver who dribbled free down the left and as she cut in and again she had no angle for a shot but unbelievably the ball went through the keepers legs for a second time and ended up in the net. Just before the break it was five when Victoria Summerfield picked up the ball from the centre circle and from about 25 yards out she hit a speculative shot which she caught only half heartily but the keeper’s misery was complete when the ball rolled under her and into the net.
