Match Report -- Season 2006-7
North East Hants Youth League - Girls Under 14
17th December 2006
Sandhurst Town 0 AFC Newbury 6
Newbury stayed top of the league with a comfortable win over mid table Sandhurst. Newbury were on top from the start and along pass from Sarah Richman found Sophie Harvey on the edge of the box and her shot was turned around the post for a corner. With only five minutes on the clock the corner from Katie Saunders on the right found Elizabeth Swallow on the edge of the box at the far post and she turned and struck a sweet left foot drive back across goal through a crowed box into the far corner. The visitors continued to dominate and the home team saw very little of the ball but Newbury failed on numerous occasions to go further ahead with their keeper making a number of good saves. The lead became two just before half time and again it was Katie who was involved, first she won the ball back in the centre circle and then skipped past a couple of tackles, before sending Victoria Summerfield free who ran onto a perfectly timed pass and she was one on one with the keeper and she made no mistake sliding the ball passed the onrushing keeper to increase the lead further.

The second half saw no change with the home team penned in their own half. Newbury made numerous changes and not for the first time this season Honor Ramos was out on pitch, relieved of her goal keeping duties this time by Chelsea Allen. Victoria added to her first goal five minutes into the second half when Hazel Beesley broke down the right beating the offside trap and she time to make her cross. It was met on the penalty spot with a fine volley which flew into the roof of the net giving the keeper no chance at all. Sophie got in on action and grabbed a brace in quick succession, her first saw her end a good passing move which had started on the edge of Newbury’s box by Sarah, and as Elizabeth threaded the ball through she had time to pick her spot and the low drive was unstoppable. Rhiannon Gainlall gifted her the second with a good dribble and a pass which found Sophie on the edge of the box and before the defenders had time to react and make a saving tackle she had already fired past the keeper beating her at the near post. Sophie nearly grabbed her hat trick when she struck a powerful shot from outside the box and it looked goal bound but the keeper made a great save only to see it fall into the path of Newbury’s Kellie Payne was on hand to tap the ball home and complete the scoring and take all three points.
