AFC Newbury Girls Under 14 Football
Match Report -- Season 2006-7
North East Hants Youth League - Girls Under 14
10th December 2006
AFC Newbury 2 Reading Girls 1
Newbury regained top spot with a thrilling win over close rivals Reading. The visitors were third going into the game, knowing a win for them would put them second ahead of Newbury and top spot was on offer for Newbury if they could win with Fleet not playing. The home team started well and good work from Katie Saunders and Ruby Oliver in midfield nearly resulted in a goal in the opening minutes but the shot from Victoria Summerfield went wide of the post. Victoria made no mistake in the 10th minute when a good ball from Chelsea Allen split the defence and she found herself clear and as the keeper ran out to meet the ball, she managed to stretch out her boot and slid the ball under the diving keeper to give the home team the lead. It could have been two minutes later when she again broke free but this time the ball beat the keeper but rolled the wrong side of the post. Newbury continued to press and Ruby Oliver also came close to scoring when she broke down the left and as she cut with just the keeper to beat she fired across goal for the far post and again for Newbury it went agonising wide of the post by inches. Reading began to find their way and soon had some pressure in Newbury’s half by all their crosses and corners were equally matched by Honor Ramos who caught and saved everything and in a goal mouth scramble stopped one on the line which looked like a certain goal. Just before the break it was Newbury again who came close when a corner found Sophie Harvey free on the penalty spot and with more time than she realised she shot first time on the turn and the ball sailed over the crossbar.

The second half saw the visitors start the better and it was Newbury’s turn to defend and good work from Honor, Chelsea, Naomi, Hazel & Rhiannon keep the home team ahead. The home team began to struggle to hold on to the ball and substitutes were made but this again didn’t stop Reading who were now playing with confidence and their captain lead from the front with most attacks coming from her, down the left. They had numerous corners and a few shoots and again Honor was on top form to deny them a goal. They got the breakthrough they deserved when a long range shot deflected off a defenders leg straight into their strikers path who had a simple tap in with only five minutes to go. Newbury were now on the back foot and again good goalkeeping kept them in the game. With a minute to go good work from Naomi Purvis down the left set Sophie Harvey free and when the keeper rushed out to meet the ball, she fumbled it, it went through her hands and as Sophie passed her she shot from the edge of the box and the ball went between two covering defenders and hit the back of the net in a thrilling finish to an entertaining and well played game.
