AFC Newbury Girls Under 14 Football
Match Report -- Season 2006-7
North East Hants Youth League - Girls Under 14
19th November 2006
AFC Newbury 15 Tilehurst Panthers 1
Newbury produced an impressive display against a depleted Tilehurst team who took the field with only 7 players. From the kick off the home team took advantage of the extra players and it was only a matter of time when the first goal would come. In the fifth minute they got their break through after a goal mouth scramble ended when Katie Saunders fired home from close range in a crowded penalty area. Minutes later Ruby Oliver latched on to a fumbled save at the far post to direct the ball home to make it two. The best goal of the game came in the 15th minute when a corner from the right was met on the edge of the box at the far post by Elizabeth Swallow who volleyed into the far corner with a blistering shot. Victoria Summerfield got in on the act with a brace in quick succession just before the break. She turned on the edge of the box and drilled the ball home into the top corner for her first and another goalkeeper fumble handed her an easy second. The visitors didn’t lie down and in a break from the back their striker broke free beat Newbury’s last defender and slid the ball home confidently passed Honor (who had been a spectator up this point) to make it 5-1 at the interval.

The second half saw the visitors tire with players missing and the home team were given more space and time than they had enjoyed in the first half. The goals came thick and fast with a goal each for defenders Chelsea Allen and a first of the season for Naomi Purvis who both were now playing in midfield and both who finished from close range with confidence. Honor Ramos now out of goalkeeper duties also grabbed a well deserved goal when she tapped in from a cross by Rhiannon Gailall. Lucy Mortimer grabbed a brace with the defenders tiring with two quick goals the first a well struck shot which gave the keeper no chance at all. The second again came from the right and Rhiannon who picked out Lucy’s run and she easily rounded a stranded keeper for a simple tap in. Elizabeth swallow also grabbed a brace to complete her hat trick with two well taken goals her first was a tap in but her second she showed real class when she again got on the end of a Katie Saunders corner and again she met it at the far post to head home with a powerful header. Victoria Summerfield added to her first half goals with a second half hat trick each of which was a one on one with the keeper and she made no mistake in front of goal to complete the scoring. The visitors showed great spirit and never gave up to their credit. Newbury’s player of the match was Rhiannon Gailall whose tireless work down the right wing set up most of Newbury’s goals.
