Match Report -- Season 2006-7
North East Hants Youth League - Girls Under 14
29th October 2006
Fleet Town Reds 3 AFC Newbury 0
For the second time this season it was a top of the table clash, with the winner’s prize, top spot in the league. The visitors won the toss and decided to use the advantage and shoot down hill. The game started even with neither team able to impose themselves on the game and it was pretty end to end on a full size heavy pitch. The first chance came Newbury’s way when Victoria Summerfield put Sophie Harvey through and as the ball bounced up about ten yards outside the box she lobbed the ball over the goal keepers head and everyone watched as the ball came down and bounced the wrong side of the goal post. The home team then began to work the counter attack and their first chance saw them break free but an excellent tackle from Naomi Purvis in the box halted a certain goal. It was from one of these attacks that the game changed and as the ball was crossed it bounced up and hit Naomi hand which was by her side and unbelievably the ref gave a penalty. Honor did her best to fill the goal but playing on a full sized pitch with full size goals it was hard and Fleet’s penalty taker made no mistake and slid the ball home. The visitors lost their cool and shape and within minutes were two down when they were caught short at the back and as the defence pushed out to late for off side the Fleet striker broke free and she rounded Honor to increase the lead and leave the visitors completely shell shocked. Newbury did rally abit but just before the break fell further behind when a good move down the right set up a good opportunity for Fleet’s player who hit the ball from the edge of the box and again in such big goals Honor had no chance and the ball went over her head and rippled into the back of the net.

The second half saw the home team defend deep and Katie Saunders moved into defence to free both defenders who moved up into midfield. The game was more even but the for all their good work the visitors could not find away back into the game. Katie played a complete captains role by clearing everything that the home team threw at her. The visitors to their credit tried their hardest but the home team stood firm and Newbury could not cancel out a very poor first half and it all stemmed from a very dodgy penalty decision from an inexperienced ref. This was Newbury’s worst performance but Fleet deserve the credit for taking all three points and top spot.
