AFC Newbury Girls Under 14 Football
Match Report -- Season 2006-7
North East Hants Youth League - Girls Under 14
7th October 2006
Reading Girls 1 AFC Newbury 5
Newbury showed their best performance so far this season in the top of the table clash against their local rivals. The visitors had a changed formation with one lone striker as in the last three meetings of the teams Newbury had come out second best. The game started at a pace with end to end football from both teams but both were unable to create a really opportunity. Newbury began to impose themselves and were a threat from Honor’s long goal kicks which had the home team on the back foot every time. The visitors thought they had taken the lead when in the 8th minute a long goal kick bounced over the defenders head and as Sophie Harvey chased it, the defender turned just inside the box to clear it, she kicked the ball right at Sophie it struck her on the shoulder and ball looped over the on rushing keepers head into the net only to be ruled out by the linesman for hand ball. Newbury did take a well deserved lead five minutes later again from one of Honor Ramos’s long goal kicks, this time Sophie won the ball and held it up on the edge of the box and when she flipped it over the defenders head to Ruby Oliver who was coming in from wide on the left, she struck the ball first time from 20 yards with a powerful volley, which fired into the far corner to put Newbury ahead. Both teams settled and played some good end to end football and both worked some good opportunities and from these saw chances come there way but some fine defending and excellent goalkeeping from both keepers kept the score 0- 1 at half time.

The second half was became a one sided affair as early as the fifth minute after mounting pressure and numerous attack the home teams defence began to crumble. Lucy Mortimer beat the offside trap with her pace and then rounded the keeper to increase the lead with an easy tap in, minutes later she grabbed another when the ball broke loose from a Katie Saunders corner and she was at the back post to slot the ball home with an outstretched foot. Sophie again turned provider and this time put Victoria Summerfield through and as passed the last defender she broke into the box and coolly slid the ball under the diving keeper. Victoria on her debut for the visitors grabbed a second and showed her class when she picked the ball up on the halfway line and as the home team pushed up to try and catch players offside she dribbled through a few challenges and went on a fine solo run and this time as the keeper rushed out she pushed the ball past her and just beat the covering defender to the ball to tap home. From another corner Elizabeth Swallow found herself free at the back post and she also tapped in but the celebration was cut short as the ref said she was offside, although no flag was raised. The home team grabbed a consolation goal in the dying minutes with a long range effort, which Honor could only get fingertips to, but this was not enough to take the shine off a great team performance.
