AFC Newbury Girls Under 14 Football
Match Report -- Season 2006-7
North East Hants Youth League - Girls Under 14
24th September 2006
Hartley Wintney 2 AFC Newbury 5
Newbury started the game minus their keeper and manager who were stuck in traffic. They were made to pay by the home team in the opening minutes when the temporary keeper misjudged a cross and the ball sneaked in at the far post. Both duelly arrived and the visitors reshaped with Sophie Harvey going back upfront. They began to find their rhythm and on a full size pitch, which was heavy underfoot, Newbury began to impose themselves on the game and for the first time had the home team pinned in their own half. They were soon level when in the 15th minute Sophie Harvey went through on goal and as she burst into the box, she and the keeper collided the ball broke lose to Elizabeth Swallow who was on hand to shoot the ball passed the covering defender to level the game. Newbury were now on top and could have taken the lead twice through Elizabeth but she rushed her chances and both saled high and wide. Just before the break Honor Ramos released Lucy Mortimer with a long goal kick and she broke down the right and after passing her defender slid Ruby Oliver in and as she entered the box she fired low and hard into the far bottom corner giving the visitors a well deserved half time lead.

The lead was not to last as straight from the kick off the home team levelled. The visitors were caught sleeping and a mix up between Naomi Purvis and Honor on the edge of the box let the attacker connect with the ball looping it over the keepers head and into an empty net. Newbury again dug deep and began to find there way and when Katie Saunders swept the ball through to Sophie Harvey on the edge of the box she kept her cool, turned neatly and struck it first time past the keeper with a low drive at the near post. Ten minutes later Newbury’s player of the match Sophie struck again when she latched onto a poor goal kick just outside the box and she took one touch before firing it past the stranded keeper into an empty net. The game and points were wrapped up when Katie Saunders picked the ball up from the half way line, she beat two defenders and as she neared the edge of the box and hit a blistering left foot shot which the keeper could only stand and watch as the ball passed over her head on its way into the roof of the net. This completed a good comeback and kept the visitors unbeaten record going.
