Match Report -- Season 2006-7
North East Hants Youth League - Girls Under 14
10th September 2006
Camberley Town 1 AFC Newbury Girls 3
Newbury kicked off their league campaign in an identical fixture to last season. The visitors started well and dominated the early possession but failed to create any clear cut chances in the opening period. The pressure began to build and numerous chances did eventually come their way and these should have be taken by Elizabeth Swallow and then Katie Saunders, but both failed to hit the target from close range. This gave the home team confidence and they began to settle and were soon sharing the spoils. With virtually their first real attack they won a corner, from the resulting corner their attacker met the ball well in the penalty area and volleyed home giving the defenders and keeper no chance. Newbury again rallied and the visitors thought they had equalised when a rasping shot from Ruby Oliver from 20 yards beat the keeper but it hit the underside of the cross bar and unfortunately bounced out and the keeper was able to collect. It should have been equal going into the break when Sophie Harvey struck the ball well from just outside the box, the keeper fumbled and it should have been an easy tap in but Elizabeth fired it straight at the keeper who deflected the ball wide keeping them ahead at half time.

Newbury continued in the same vein and chance after chance came, mainly to Elizabeth who just could not get the right connection or direction on her shots but it was only a matter of time before the equaliser came. It did come 10 minutes into the half when Lucy Mortimer broke down the right and the cross beat the keeper at the near post leaving Sophie Harvey an easy tap in from close range. Minutes later Newbury were ahead in a most bizarre goal when goalkeeper Honor Ramos kicked the ball from her hands, catching it very well and it flew down the other end of the pitch, its first bounce was in the opposition penalty area and as their keeper rushed out to meet it, it went over her head and bounced again straight into the net. The home team began to look beat their heads dropped and they began to look tired and in the closing minutes Newbury’s player of the match Lucy again got free down the right and passed to Elizabeth Swallow who turned on the edge of the box with a neat trick and this time fired the ball into the bottom corner giving her a well deserved goal and completing a good comeback for the visitors and give them all three points to open the season with.
