Match Report -- Season 2006-7
North East Hants Youth League - Girls Under 14
Premier League Champions Play-off
13th May 2007
AFC Newbury Girls 4 v Fleet Town Reds 3
The joint league leaders went head to head on a neutral pitch in a play-off for the North East Hants Premier League Title, which was on stake for the winners. The game started at a furious pace with end to end football and it was Fleet who settled first and began to pile on the pressure. They were winning every ball and were first to every tackle and when a good move set their striker free, she rounded Honor Ramos and with the just the goal to hit she under hit her shot and Naomi Purvis was on hand to clear it off the line. From the resulting corner Fleet did take the lead when Hailey Thomas tried to head the ball clear but in the wet the ball skidded off her head and over Honor’s head in to the net. To Newbury’s credit they didn’t panic and began to find their feet and minutes later were level when Victoria Summerfield sent Lucy Mortimer through and as their keeper ran out to kick the ball clear, Lucy charged down the clearance and the ball went back past her and rolled into an unguarded net. Lucy put Newbury ahead a few minutes before half time when Hailey threaded a good pass through and she ran onto it just inside the box but wide on the right, she fired first time across the goalie into the far corner with a fine low drive.

The second half, saw Fleet look for an equaliser and in the 10th minute were awarded a penalty when Chelsea Allen missed the ball and instead kicked the onrushing striker. It looked like it was going to be level, but Honor Ramos pulled off a great save diving to her left to keep Newbury ahead. They did draw level five minutes later when good work down the right caught Newbury out and the cross beat everyone apart from their attacker who slid the ball home. Newbury were not behind long when Newbury’s player of the match Lucy Mortimer crossed from the right and as the keeper ran out to catch it she fumbled the ball in mid air and it went behind her where Ruby Oliver was able to beat the defender to the ball to tap the ball home. A few minutes later Chelsea Allen ran from the edge of her own box in support of Elizabeth Swallow who had held the ball up well and as she entered the oppositions half Elizabeth slipped the ball through to her and with legs tiring she was clear. She looked up and saw the keeper stood on the penalty spot and from a good 30 yards she hit a fantastic shot which looped over the keepers head and into the net with a goal worthy of winning any league title. The visitors were not done and in the last minute grabbed a consolation goal but it was now enough to take the shine off Newbury’s impressive win or their first League title.
