AFC Newbury Ladies Football
Match Report -- Season 2006-7
Southern Region Women's Football League Division 1
22nd October 2006
Oxford United 7 AFC Newbury 5
This was a game for the spectators, dry in the stand, at Ifley Road Stadium but not for the team management probably of either team. Although Oxford would have been happy with the win both teams were vulnerable in defence. On balance Oxford deserved the win as they were much better organised particularly down both flanks, but in reality Newbury had enough chances to win even though they were leaking goals. Newbury had the first opportunity to score after 3 minutes when Elli Reed put the ball over the bar after the first corner of the game. Minutes later Newbury opened the scoring for Oxford with an own goal when Caz Harkness, desperately trying to clear the ball from the line when a cross floated over the Newbury defence and keeper, struck the ball into the back of the net. This setback stirred Newbury who quickly equalised when Elli passed to Kendall Gilmour whose first shot was parried by the keeper but she was able to score at the second attempt. Oxford then regained the lead with a well worked move down the right pulling the Newbury defence out of position to give the centre forward an easy tap in past Jane Pearcey in goal. Again Newbury replied, this time within a minute of the kick off, when Chelsea Starbuck scored by shooting over the keeper into the far side of the net from a narrow angle. Unfortunately for Newbury Oxford again undid the Newbury defence down the right hand side to regain the lead within 4 minutes. 7 minutes before halftime Newbury were again embarrassed allowing Oxford to shoot unopposed into the net. Keeper Jane was then injured just before halftime when making a low save.

The second half saw Chloe Hunt in goal for the injured keeper and the debut of Charlotte Moring for Newbury at left back. Unfortunately the change of keeper did nothing for the leaky defence. Within minutes of the change round an unchallenged attacker lined up a shot which went in off the underside of the bar with Chloe desperately trying to reach the ball. Kendall kept Newbury in the hunt with a well taken goal which the referee allowed despite the linesman’s flag for offside. Again Oxford restored their 3 goal lead when yet another cross from the right resulted in a simple tap in. The goals kept coming this time through the middle to take the score to 7-3 to the home side. This resulted in a frenetic final 10 minutes. With a little more composure by Newbury in front of goal the game could still have resulted in at least a draw. Kendall scored twice including a penalty after Chelsea had been brought down by the keeper.
