Match Report -- Season 2006-7
Southern Region Women's Football League Division 1
3rd September 2006
AFC Newbury 5 Portsmouth 'A' 0
Newbury opened the season with a very comfortable win against Portsmouth. Their first goal came after just 6 minutes when former Thatcham Ladies captain, Karen Churchill, scored the first of her 3 goals after Colleen Geis had neatly laid the ball to her to strike low into the corner of the net. Karen’s second showed her full awareness of the position when she back healed the ball into the net from a pass by Chelsea Starbuck after 12 minutes. The third goal came from a free kick midway into the Porstmouth half which was taken by Caz Harkness to Karen who chested the ball down to Leanne Creese who put the ball in the back of the net. 10 minutes later Leanne almost scored her second when Colleen headed the ball to her only to see the shot rise over the bar with the keeper well beaten. The half ended with Jane Pearcey, playing her first league match in goal for Newbury, only having touched the ball a couple of times.

The second half opened with Newbury continuing to dominate but Portsmouth were more organised in defence which helped keep the score down. Karen had further chances to score but the ball went over the bar. After 22 minutes Leanne got her second, beating a defender and keeper in a challenge, which saw the ball go through the keeper’s legs. The final goal came when substitute right back, Lauren Sheldon, played the ball up the right hand side of the pitch to Leanne, now playing in right midfield, crossing to Colleen, on the left hand side of the goal, who set up Karen for her hat trick.
