Match Report -- Season 2006-7
Berks & Bucks Women’s Cup round 2
15th October 2006
Marlow Ladies 2 AFC Newbury Ladies 11
Newbury won the Berks and Bucks Cup second round match against Marlow repeating their round 1 tally of 11 goals. The result was not as convincing as the score suggests. Newbury were strangely lethargic throughout this game. Once again Newbury’s firepower dominated the game with all 4 attacking players contributing to the score. Karen Churchill led the way with 5 but Elli Reed also had a hattrick capping a fine game on the left wing. Elli opened the scoring after 2 minutes when put through by Kendall Gilmour and minutes later nearly scored again after beating several defenders only to be thwarted by the keeper who pushed the ball away for a corner. Colleen Geis was next in action trying to lob the keeper who responded with an excellent fingertip save. Karen then scored a trademark nearpost goal from a cross by Leanne on the right. After half an hour Karen tried to lob the keeper in a similar shot to Colleen’s earlier effort but this time the keeper could not hang onto the ball leaving Karen to score from her second attempt. Marlow responded quickly breaking through the middle of a flat Newbury defence to make the score 3-1. This response caused Newbury to lift their game and they added 2 more goals prior to half time , the first by Elli scoring after her shot first hit the post and then finally Kendall scored after several earlier misses. Marlow were unlucky just before halftime when a shot hit the post.

2 minutes into the second half Marlow were rewarded with a second goal again coming from confusion in the Newbury defence which rightly encouraged the home team, however Karen was on hand to effectively kill off the game with 2 quick goals to make the score 7-2. Elli created the 8th goal with some dazzling skill on the left leaving Karen a simple header on the goal line for her 4th. Elli was then rewarded with her hat trick with a looping back header over a stranded keeper into the far corner of the net. Leanne Creese, desperately trying to get onto the score sheet, was really unlucky when the keeper’s free kick came straight to her 45 yards out. Her first time shot drifted inches to the right of the post. Kendall added the 10th with a well taken shot past the keeper before Leanne finally scored, somewhat fortuitously, as the referee was the only person in the ground not to see the handball that led to the goal.
