AFC Newbury Girls Under 13 Football
Match Report -- Season 2005-6
North East Hants Youth League - Girls Under 13
12th February 2006
AFC Newbury 7 Barton Rovers 2
The home team extended their winning ways but with a less than impressive win over a depleted Barton side that started the game two players short. The home team did dominate the early exchanges and should have taken the lead on numerous occasions but the visitor’s goalkeeper was equal to every shot. The pressure was mounting and in the 12th Minute the dead lock was broke when Katie Saunders rode two challenges on the edge of the box and fired home from close range in to the roof of the net giving the home team the lead. Not for the first time this season the home team gave the lead away within a minute when the visitors broke down the right and when the ball was crossed their player finished well giving the keeper no chance. The lead was restored five minutes later when a good run from Lizzie Swallow released Sophie Harvey down the left who took a touch before firing home from a narrow angle, beating the keeper at the near post. The scores were level again on the stroke of half time when Newbury were caught at the back and when Chelsea Allen and Honor Ramos tackled each other on the edge of the box the ball ran to a Barton player who had the easiest of tap ins.

The second half was a different story with the home team taking full advantage of their extra players. They started well and the lead was once again restored when captain Lucy Mortimer broke down the right before cutting in and firing home with a powerful strike. This time they did not surrender the lead and instead built on it. Katie added her second after a goalmouth scramble, which saw several shots, blocked in a crowded box before her shot went through a few legs into the bottom corner. As the away team tired Newbury stretched the play and this was on show when Sophie returned the first half favour to Lizzie with a great switch of play from right to left which put her in the clear and with only the keeper to beat she dribbled round her confidently and slid the ball home. Within minutes Lizzie grabbed her second with a fine solo effort after turning on the edge of the box she then hit a sweet right foot shot into the bottom corner which the keeper could only watch fly in. The scoring was completed and the points taken when Sophie grabbed her second, after beating a few defenders on the right she cut in and as she entered the box she wasted no time in again shooting from a narrow angle and like before saw her shot ripple the net finishing off a tired but gutsy performance from the visitors. Player of the match went to Kelly Summers who was totally focused and reliable in the centre of defence.
