Match Report -- Season 2005-6
North East Hants Youth League - Girls Under 13
5th February 2006
AFC Newbury 5 Hook United 1
After losing on penalties last week, Newbury bounced back from their first defeat of the season in the cup to continue their unbeaten run in the league. The home team started well and did dominate the early play but the visitors did soon find their feet and the game became end to end but with neither team creating a clear opportunity. Newbury had more of the share of the possession and from one attack Hazel Beesley collected the ball on the edge of the box but just delayed her shot enough for Hook's defender to block the shot and the ball went for a corner. From the resulting corner from the right, Katie Saunders' inswinging cross caught everyone out and, like last week, the defender on the line was not expecting it and deflected it into her own net. The lead only lasted a minute and a break down the right from the kick off caught the home team napping and when the attacker crossed the ball it found her colleague all alone on the penalty spot. She took a touch before firing for the bottom corner and Honor Ramos did very well to get a diving right hand on to the ball but it hit the post and rolled in to level the match. The scores remained level until just before the break, when good work from Ruby Oliver in a new role at centre midfield beat two players before releasing Katie Saunders down the right and when she crossed the ball, Nicole Beesley took the ball in her stride and she fired past an outstretched keeper at the far post with a neat half volley.

The second half started in the same vein with the home team dominating the possession but failing to convert the chances created. Midway through the half Newbury then had two Sophie Harvey goals disallowed for offside and the home team were becoming frustrated. This soon changed when Elizabeth Swallow was put clear by Ruby Oliver who this time beat the offside trap and when the keeper came off her line she coolly toed the ball past her and it rolled into the far corner increasing the lead. It soon became a one man show when five minutes later Elizabeth worked a good one two with Sophie and she ran onto a clever pass before beating the last defender and as she burst into the box she took no time at all in shooting past a stranded keeper again into the far corner. Minutes later the hat trick was complete when Elizabeth was again put through with a neat pass from Charlotte Coventry and she finished again with a cool finish, which was very much, like her first goal. This completed the scoring and gave the home team all three points to keep them top and capped a fine debut for Elizabeth with player of the match going to Ruby Oliver who dominated the midfield from start to finish.
