AFC Newbury Girls Under 13 Football
Match Report -- Season 2005-6
North East Hants Youth League - Girls Under 13
22nd January 2006
Sandhurst Town 1 AFC Newbury 9
After a few lack lustre wins in recent weeks, Newbury returned to sparkling form with a convincing win over a team they only narrowly beat a few weeks ago in the cup. From the kick off the visitors dominated as the home team struggled to get a touch or get out of their own half. The first chance soon came and fell to Hazel Beesley who had picked up the ball on the edge of the box but she rushed her shot and it went wide. Newbury won numerous corners from some good defending and with the home teams goalkeeper making some good saves the visitors failed to convert any of them into goals.

The post and crossbar then saved the home team before Hannah Benson saw her goal bound shot very well saved by the diving keeper. Lucy Mortimer broke the dead lock when Nicole Beesley crossed from the left and she met the ball perfectly to tap home from close range at the far post. Katie Saunders made it two minutes later with a powerfully struck shot from the edge of the box giving the keeper no chance. The best goal of the game came when Nicole Beesley broke down the left from the halfway line before beating two defenders and as she entered the box she waited no time firing a low drive into the far corner with an accurate shot. Katie Saunders again found herself free on the edge of the box and increased the lead further with a sweet left foot strike. Naomi Purvis made it five on the stroke of half time when she won the ball from just outside the box, she then dribbled past the defender before shooting from distance, it took a wicked deflection in the box and it beat a stranded keeper who had no chance going the other way.

The second half saw both teams change their keepers, captain Lucy Mortimer swapping positions with Honor Ramos for the visitors, and to immediate effect. The half was only two minutes old when Honor got on the end of a poor goal kick and she blasted the ball into an empty net. Honor didn’t stop there and when Chelsea Allen put her through she grabbed her second with an easy tap in. She completed her hat trick only minutes later when she beat two defenders and as the goalie came out she confidently slid the ball home with a classy finish. Emma Tindall and Kellie Payne both came very close to getting on the score sheet on a few occasions but the home keeper pulled off some good saves denying them. Katie Saunders also got a hat trick, when an in swinging corner caught everyone out and the defender at the far post failed to clear and could only watch it hit the net. The visitors to their credit didn’t give up and grabbed a consolation goal from a poor goal kick but this was not enough to spoil a good day for Newbury girls.
