AFC Newbury Girls Under 13 Football
Match Report -- Season 2005-6
North East Hants Youth League - Girls Under 13
15th January 2006
Hartley Witney Eagles 2 AFC Newbury Girls U13 4
Newbury for the second week in a row had to faced a tough test this time away to Hartley Witney the team they narrowly beat last week. On a heavy pitch the game was slow to get going as both teams struggled to pass the ball with it sticking in the mud. The visitors did begin to find their feet and began to dominate but for all the good play and the chances they created could not get the break through they were looking for. Newbury's opponents were happy to sit on the edge of their own box and this drew both defenders Chelsea Allen and Naomi Purvis further up the pitch. They both were now playing as midfielders and as they pushed further and further up the pitch this left a huge space behind them. The home team began to notice this and they knew how to play better on their pitch and soon were breaking with speed. The first few breaks came to nothing as Emma Tindall came to Newbury’s rescue showing real determination and some great tackling. On such a big pitch the visitors were soon caught out with another counter attack and this time just the keeper to beat and when Honor Ramos came rushing out of her goal she was easily beaten with a low drive into the near post. Newbury continued to dominate and Hartley were happy to rely on the few chances they got but on the stroke of half time the scores were level when Lucy Mortimer got on the end of a cross from Ruby Oliver and slid the ball home from close range.

The second half started off in deadlock with the game following the pattern of the first half. Newbury again had more of the possession but again poor passing at the vital stages let the visitors down. Midway through the second half Newbury were again caught to far forward and Emma tried to get back but again Honor was left no chance and so Newbury found themselves behind again. The visitors for the second time this season would have to come from behind if they wanted to win the game and keep the unbeaten record intact. They stepped up a gear, which showed real character and began to pass the ball quicker and from a good break down the right between Charlotte Coventry and Lucy Mortimer, leading goal scorer Sophie Harvey found herself free on the penalty spot and she finished with ease to level the scores again. Minutes later Katie Saunders burst from the half way line beating a few defenders and when she was blocked on the edge of the box she spun on the ball and she struck a fierce left foot shot which gave the keeper no chance. The game was wrapped up when Newbury added their forth and again the break came down the right and when the ball was crossed this time it was Ruby Oliver who was on hand at the back post who took a touch before drilling the ball home, returning Newbury to the top of the League as joint leaders.

Player of the match went to Emma Tindall who gave an outstanding display of defending and helping Newbury to all three points.
