Match Report -- Season 2005-6
North East Hants Youth League - Girls Under 13
8th January 2006
AFC Newbury 2 Hartley Witney Eagles 1
Newbury started 2006 where they left of and added another win to their already impressive season. They remain unbeaten though this win was far from convincing. The home team started well and dominated possession in the early stages and soon had the visitors penned in their own half. They created some good chances but these were missed or easily saved by the visitors keeper. The first clear chance came to Lucy Mortimer when she was sent clear by Sophie Harvey with a clever one two. This beat the last defender by the centre circle and with only the keeper to beat as she entered the box her shot was poor and wide of the goal. Newbury continued to dominate but for all the possession and goal mouth action they still failed to find the net even with good shots by Ruby Oliver, Katie Saunders & Sophie Harvey. After twenty minutes of deadlock the home team did take the lead when Lucy Mortimer broke free down the wing and her cross was met by Sophie Harvey who took one touch before firing home into the far corner with a very accurate low shot. The lead was only held till just before half time when the visitors, in a rare attack, got past the last defender and, with only the goalie to beat, the ball was slid confidently past the out rushing goalkeeper, levelling the scores at the break.

The second half did not really improve with both teams looking less than their best. Neither failed to dominate or really create a chance for some time at the start of the second half. Midway through the half, with both teams looking even more jaded, both Hannah Benson and then Hazel Beesley began to boss the midfield for the home team. They both became more confident and began running at the opposition and within minutes of each other both had dribbled their way past a few players from the half way line to the edge of the Eagles box, only to see their well struck shots equally matched with very good saves from the visitors keeper. It was looking like a draw was on the cards but with legs tiring more chances soon came. The first was to the Eagles who again beat the offside trap but with Honor off her line quicker she was able to put the striker off and she fired wide, a minute later Newbury were again caught and this time Honor was again off her line but the shot was good and she could only watch as the ball went over her head and with the crowd waiting for the ball to ripple the net it was the cross bar that saved them before Naomi Purvis cleared. This shook the home team up and Newbury dug deeper and when Ruby Oliver broke free it was Sophie again who met the cross and scored with a goal virtually identical to her first, giving the home team all the points and saving their blushes.
