AFC Newbury Girls Under 13 Football
Match Report -- Season 2005-6
North East Hants Youth League - Girls Under 13
2nd October 2005
Rushmoor Saints 0 AFC Newbury 20
When moving to a new league, as the Newbury under 13 girls did this season, there is always times when you are likely to be uncertain as to the quality of the opposition faced. Now in the North East Hants League and playing nine a side instead of seven and with the off-side laws applying for the first time, the first two games of the season were approached understandably, with some trepidation. A previous hard fought 3-6 victory away to an under strength Camberley Town and an evenly balanced 0-0 draw at home to Fleet town Blues, showed that the girls would have to be at their very best for every game this season.

However, it became clear to the visitors after only a few minutes into the match, away to Rushmoor Saints of Farnham, that this game would not be one of their most challenging. The well disciplined and skilful Newbury were obviously going to be too difficult for the Saints. Newbury's midfield quickly controlled the game and good service from Katie Saunders and Ruby Oliver were soon creating chances for the strike force of Sophie Harvey and Charlotte Coventry, which were soon taken with some excellent finishing. Any breaks made by Rushmoor were very soon broken down by Newbury's defence, especially with the speed and strength of Chelsea Allen.

By half time and with the score at 0-7, some changes were made and the first being the Newbury goalkeeper Honor Ramos swapping positions and then showing that as well as a very good goalie, what a quality outfield player she is, scoring five goals in the second half.

With the final score finishing at 0-20 it has to be said that Newbury Girls will face stronger opposition and challenges as the season progresses. But the confidence that a result like this gives, is as welcome as the goal difference. Newbury are now top of the league.
