AFC Newbury Girls Under 13 Football
Match Report -- Season 2005-6
North East Hants Youth League - Girls Under 13
25th October 2005
AFC Newbury 0 Fleet Town Blues 0
Newbury played host to an in form Fleet team, who had in their first two games been scoring goals for fun. It was the away team who started the better and got their passing game going. The home team struggled to get hold of the ball and although they defended well in and around their penalty area they were giving the ball straight back to the visitors when trying to clear. For all their possession the visitors failed to create a chance and this gave the home team confidence and they began to find their feet and did get the first corner of the game when Sophie saw her long range shot deflected. Newbury were now sharing the spoils and looked most likely to break the deadlock and won numerous corners but Fleet stood firm. Newbury came close just before the break when Lucy beat her defender but shot wide, the away team responded almost immediately but Honor pulled off a great save diving to her left hand post.

The second half carried on in the same manor with both teams playing good passing football. The home team thought they had the lead when Lucy again broke free and fired past the keeper only for an offside flag to rule out the goal. Katie then saw a well taken free kick saved by the keeper. Newbury dominated most of the half but the visitors did have a half chance when they failed to clear from a rare corner but it was Fleet’s turn to fire wide. A draw looked on the cards with only a few minutes to go but poor clearances by the keeper gave Ruby, Lucy and then Sophie all good chances and with only the goalie to beat but each shot too early and failed to find the net. It was a well deserved and very entertaining draw for both teams and Newbury’s player of the match was Naomi Purvis who stood out with a fine performance.
