AFC Newbury Ladies Reserves Football
Match Report -- Season 2005-6
Thames Valley Counties Women's Football League
Division 2 (South)
19th March 2006
Wantage Town 4 AFC Newbury 0
Newbury completed their league season with a disappointing result away to Wantage Town. The conditions were difficult for both teams, the pitch was hard and grassless and the wind quite strong. Neither side really got to grips with the difficult bounce and the ball was in the air a lot when the conditions dictated that it would be better played on the ground. The game was initially quite even but Wantage scored first when the Newbury defence, playing into the wind, failed to clear the ball. The Wantage striker took the opportunity to put the ball into the corner of the net. As the half progressed Wantage started to exert more pressure and inevitably 10 minutes before half time they extended their lead. Roisin Winston and Pam Hartley then both suffered injuries before half time and for a few minutes Newbury were reduced to 9 players.

In the second half Newbury were playing up hill but with the wind. The game was much more evenly contested with Sue Hewett getting in an early shot on goal. But 10 minutes into the half Wantage scored a third with an excellent shot. The game was now opening up and Leanne Creese had a shot before Holly Randall, who was putting in another excellent performance in goal, made 3 good saves. On the half hour Roisin, now playing left back, won the ball and before nutmegging the midfielder and putting Lucy Ward away. Lucy won a corner from which Newbury almost scored, the ball being cleared off the line. Wantage went back on the attack and scored from the narrowest of angles after Holly initially saved well pushing the ball wide of the left hand post. There was still time for Lucy to shoot and from the resulting corner Leanne had a shot saved. Although Wantage were the stronger team 4-0 was a bit flattering but it must be said they took all four of their goals very well.

This is Newbury Reserves first season and several players have not played 11-a-side football before, indeed some of the players only started playing this season. They have only won one league match this season but the team has bonded very well, the spirit good and the signs are encouraging fro next season. Football will continue with training, friendlies and tournaments. New and experienced players are encouraged and welcome to come along.
