AFC Newbury Ladies Reserves Football
Match Report -- Season 2005-6
Thames Valley Counties Women's Football League
Division 2 (South)
5th February 2006
AFC Newbury 2 Wycombe Wanderers Reserves 5
Newbury opened the match in positive mode winning first corner in the opening minutes of the game but Wycombe soon responded with a series of corners which Newbury defended well. Wycombe were unlucky with a shot which hit the post. Minutes later Kendall Gilmour saw the keeper of her line and shot from fully 45 yards the ball just passing the right hand post. Newbury were lucky not to go 1 down when Wycombe were awarded a penalty for hand ball. The penalty kick going over the bar. Moments later they did score when a poor clearance was picked up and the forward ran in to score. Immediately from the kickoff Kendall was again unlucky when her shot went over the bar. Holly then made an excellent save from a Wycombe break. On the half hour the midfield of Lucy Ward and Roisin Winston worked the ball to Kendall wide on the left who put a cross into the box which Sian Makepeace volleyed into the net over the stranded keeper to equalise the score. Wycombe fell into confusion and for the next 10 minutes Newbury were on top until a Wycombe forward picked up a loose ball and drove into the area to regain the lead 5 minutes before half time.

The second half started really badly for Newbury. In the first minute the defence conceded a bizarre own goal when Sam McConnon mishit an attempted clearance over the keeper's head. The players on both sides seemed to stop expecting an infringement but there was no whistle. The next 5 minutes saw Newbury concede two futher goals when they failed to clear crosses into the box. At this point Newbury could have crumbled but they rallied and the rest of the half was evenly contested. Kendall had several opportunities which went wide and she was really unlucky again when the Wycombe keeper half saved a good shot taking enough pace off the ball to allow a defender to clear the ball off the goalline. Lucy, having reverted to forward when Leanne Creese came on as a sub, was rewarded with a really well taken goal 5 minutes from the end. Apart from the unfortunate 5 minutes after half time this was a good performance by the reserve team who continue to make progress.
