AFC Newbury Ladies Reserves Football
Match Report -- Season 2005-6
Thames Valley Counties Women's Football League
Division 2 (South)
22nd January 2006
AFC Newbury 2 Chalfont St Peter 1
Newbury Reserves won their first game in a match with a nailbiting second half. Newbury opened the match strongly and Lucy Ward soon had an opportunity to score from a through ball by Sue Hewett. Lucy's shot was well saved by the keeper. Minutes later Lucy was again put through, this time by Left back Sophie Mason, Lucy's shot was this time not saved cleanly and crept over the line to give Newbury an early lead. Newbury continued to keep the play in the Chalfont half. Holly Randall had to make a good save from a rare break by Chalfont. Chloe Hunt, the first team keeper playing centre forward for the reserves, was keeping the visitor's defence fully occupied and forced a save from the keeper and this was followed shortly by Kate Pike also shooting, but her shot was wide of the post. After 30 minutes Chalfont had another break Holly forcing the attacker to shoot just wide of the post. Newbury forced a corner which Chloe took the ball came back to Chloe who drove into the area to shoot across the goal past the left hand post. Kate then had another shot followed by a shot by Roisin Winston. As the first half went into injury time Newbury won another corner, this time from the left, which Chloe put dangerously into the 6 yard box. A defender and the keeper pushed the ball clear but Pam Hartley was on hand to head the ball into the net for a 2 nil half time lead.

Newbury came out for the second half, the first time defending a lead. Chalfont clearly did not want to loose this match having beaten the league leaders the week before. They were rewarded for their efforts with a goal 8 minutes into the half with a well taken shot high over Holly's head. Chalfont were also able to introduce their best player in the previous game who arrived at half time. This all set up a tense second half with Chalfont applying a lot of pressure to the Newbury defence. Newbury were relying on the odd break by Chloe who had several opportunities but each time shot within reach of the Chalfont keeper. The Newbury defence was well organised by Lorna Parr with all four players contibuting well. Both full backs were making strong tackles and winning the ball. Sophie Mason playing only her second game as left back seems to found her position and Lauren Sheldon at right back was awarded player of the match.
